On Internet Writing Styles

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

I bury the lead. A lot. Most of the time, in fact.

I am aware of the inverted pyramid structure for writing newspaper articles. I understand search engine optimization. I realize that getting to the heart of the matter quickly is good for eyeball retention and PageRank. But I still bury the lead on most of these posts.

This web site is my personal voice. And I don’t speak in the edited prose of a newspaper column.  I tend to speak in anecdotes and asides.  When I’m relating a fact I tend to turn it into an opportunity to tell a story.  To add context and opinion.  That’s just my personal style.

It doesn’t apply in all arenas of life.  When I write work emails or communicate verbally with colleagues on business matters I tend to be very concise and to the point.  But I don’t consider this web site to be a professional endeavor.  It reflects the style of my personal life, not my office communications.

I’ve thought about trying to write more in a more professional tone that would help out my search engine results and perhaps attract more readers.  But in the end, it’s not faithful to the spirit of what I’m trying to accomplish.  So I’m comfortable with the trade-off.

This Week in Startups

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Jason Calacanis has launched a new talk show style podcast called This Week in Startups.  The first episode came out on May 2nd, featuring Brian Alvey who founded Crowd Fusion.  There is also a tech news segment and I enjoy Jason’s “John McLaughlin” style predictions.

Overall it’s an enjoyable show, but it’s long.  I wish I had more time to watch/listen to these types of podcasts.  Unfortunately I don’t even have time to listen to hallmarks like This Week in Tech.  So I doubt I will be a regular viewer of This Week in Startups, but for those who have the time I’d recommend it.

I’m still waiting for when I can download this kind of content to my TiVo.

My How TV Ratings Have Changed

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

I’m a big fan of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles on FOX. I didn’t start watching the show terminator-the-sarah-connor-chroniclesuntil earlier this year. But I then bought both seasons one and two from Amazon’s on-demand service to catch up. I also bought the first season on DVD and preordered the second season. I like the show.

So I was dismayed last night when reading that it’s unlikely to return for a third season. Which got me curious about the show’s ratings.

I used to be fairly informed about the entertainment business. Well television, movies, and music at any rate. I’ve never known much about the theater. A long time ago I had this idea I wanted to buy a television network (a story for another day). So I set about educating myself on the business.

UN World Digital Library

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

I saw a story on Slashdot yesterday that linked to BBC coverage of the United Nations’ World Digital Library project.  I checked it out and it looks pretty cool.  In my brief browsing of the site I didn’t find anything that jumped out as “must look at” but I would have loved to have resources like this when I was in school taking world history classes and having to write papers.

The Internet is a great platform for commerce, entertainment, and communications but I’m glad that we haven’t lost the early intent to make scholarly resources available to anyone in the world.  I’m a huge fan of online library projects and while I don’t spend a lot of time browsing online libraries I love that so many primary source documents from the world’s great libraries have been made available, often for free, to any interested party.

That’s a wonderful democratization of information.

Created My Google Profile

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I had an unofficial New Years resolution for myself to update this site more often.  So far I’m not off to a great start in 2009.  I have created a Google profile for myself, as Google now includes profiles in their search results.

It’s funny; I don’t have a particularly common name and yet results about me never come up at the top of searches on my name.  I blame the Canadian librarian who I apparently share my name with.  He seems to be interviewed a lot.  One of these years I’ll have to work on pushing up my PageRank.  But it doesn’t look like it’s going to be this year.
