Iconic Erotic Cinema

Posted in life at 10:11 pm by mridley

So I finally got around to watching two of the more “iconic” erotic films this past week. And I have mixed reviews. The first flick I finally wathced was Last Tango in Paris. I’ve started watching that movie a bunch of times, but I always get bored in the middle. This time was no exception, but I stuck it out to the end. I don’t think I “get it”. I’m pretty sure there is a point to the movie, but I have no idea what it is. And the ending was just confusing to me. I guess French cinema is lost on me.

The other movie I caught was sex, lies, and videotape. Despite the fact that I am not a big Steven Soderberg fan in general, I actually did enjoy this movie. The pacing was good and I found the characters compelling. Although I did realize that a younger James Spader does seem to bear quite a resembalance to Jeremy London. It was hard not to look at him and think “Griffin, from Party of Five”. All in all if you haven’t seen it, I’d reccomend sex, lies, and videotape. Not so much Last Tango in Paris.

DMV

Posted in life at 12:54 am by mridley

Screwed by car insurance.  Story of my life - having problems that other people just don’t have.  I got pulled over for an illegal left turn the other day.  Not a big deal really.  But it turns out that my license was suspended, which I didn’t know because I didn’t update my address with the DMV when I moved.  So I ended up having to take a cab home and a cab to work.  Then I walked to the DMV to see what was up with my license.

It turns out that my license was suspended because I let the car insurnace lapse on my car that has a broken timing belt that is not driveable.  I had insurance on the car that I actually drive, mind you.  But apparently that’s not allowed.  So I had to pay $580 to get my license back, plus another $85 to transfer the title for the car that I am driving (which I needed to do anyway and just hadn’t got around to).  So $700 later I have my license back.  Oh, and I had to add my dead car on to my insurance policy, and call my insurance company to let them know that I am now a super high risk scary driver.

Fan-fucking-tastic.  Story of my life.

Lack of Updates

Posted in life at 1:14 am by mridley

I haven’t found time to update this site in ages as I have been super busy with work, plus sick, and just have had no energy.  I’ll try to do better.  It’s ironic, as starting my new job (which is a good one) has made me realize how very little passion I have left for the IT world.  I think I may go back to writing, but that’s tricky as I have a hard time summoning the energy even to find amusing anecdotes to post here much less trying to write something more substantial.

Also I need to determine my format.  Years ago I toyed with the idea/desire to become a screenwriter but I never seriously pursued it as it’s such an unrealistic goal.  Of course making a living as any sort of professional writer is more involved than getting a job at Starbucks.  So who knows.  Pipe dreams continued, I’m sure.  We’ll see.

Havoc

I watched this movie Havoc on cable recently. I’m pretty sure that I found out about it from Alex Albrecht, as I recall him mentioning on diggnation that Anne Hathaway was in a very non-Disney movie. And unless she’s a total freak-a-leek, I suppose he was referring to Havoc. It’s about a “gang” of priviledged high school kids growing up in Pacific Palisades who decide to slum it in downtown LA. Overall the movie isn’t fantastic, and the subject of a growing up with priviledge yet feeling alienated and struggling to pacify one’s personal demons was better covered by Kirsten Dunst in Crazy/Beautiful. Nevertheless, Anne Hathaway has her top off in every other scene (yes the girl from the Princess Diairies) which makes Havoc very watchable. Yeah yeah, I’m no Pauline Kahle, but this isn’t Last Tango in Paris either.
