As I have written here before, I’m trying to get my podcast Showbiz News - Online off the ground. Of course to report the showbiz news you have to know what’s going on. So that means I have to read the trade magazines.
The problem is that I live in the Washington, DC suburbs. You can’t even get Daily Variety home delivery in the eastern Los Angeles suburbs. If I subscribed I would be getting the news days or even weeks late, which is totally pointless.
Aha, Internet to the rescue!

Apparently there was a whale swimming up the Thames the other day. I wonder if it’s whale season on the Potomac yet.

There was a post on the Google Blog that Google Talk is now supporting XMPP open federation. I do not pretend to know all that much (at all!) about XMPP or how this works exactly. But I do know that my Dreamhost account includes its own Jabber server/service. I have not had any occaision to actually use this before. But now with Google Talk allowing for open federation, I wonder if this means that Dreamhost will be able to synch up with them and then I could have Google Talk people instant messaging me through a domain hosted at Dreamhost. Interesting concept. Guess we’ll see how it shakes out.

I was listening to the radio and heard a report that apparently the US Department of Homeland Security and the State Department are working together to create ID cards for US citizens who frequently travel to Canada and Mexico. This confuses me a bit, as I thought we already had ID cards for that. Called passports.
The news story said that apparently these cards will be simpler to get and create a more streamlined and simple process. I didn’t realize getting a passport was that laborous. This seems like a solution in search of a problem to me. What’s the point of doing this? I don’t get it.

I happened to be looking at the web site for Tyson’s Galleria mall yesterday, and much to my surprise The Grooming Lounge is listed as “Coming Soon”. And sure enough, from checking their web site they do list a Tyson’s location opening this winter.
This is very exciting as I have stopped getting manicures owing to a lack of decent places to go. And K street is just a bit farther than I feel like going. So it will be convenient to have one closer to home.

Apparently Sony announced a new version of their ebook product at CES last week. I saw the story pop up in the usual places (digg, slashdot). I’m pretty jazzed about this. From the articles it appears that it will indeed be on sale in the United States for between $300 and $400. I have gazed longingly at the Sony Librie but paying almost $500 to buy it through Dynamism only to get a device with a Japanese keyboard has been kind of a non-starter for me.

As we all know, I spend a good portion of my day stalking Whitney Cummings. Just kidding, I could never be much of a stalker. That seems like something that would involve a lot of planning. And patience. And maps. Way too much effort. Who has the energy for that?
However, I did come across this press release that Ms. Cummings will be hosting the Sundance Channel’s 2006 “Festival Dailies” program covering the Sundance Awards. Alas I do not get the Sundance Channel so I will not be watching this. But I wanted to give all you other Whitney Cummings fans outs there a heads up.
Check it.

I wrote previously about Tivo making Rocketboom available through their boxes. I wanted to write a follow-up now that they have actually launched this and I am receiving Rocketboom on my Tivo. It’s awesome! This is going to be the future of internet video. Watching “shows” on a computer is often not a great experience from an ergonomic perspective and I can’t wait until I can download my other favorite programs such as commandN and Diggnation via Tivo.

I finished The Supreme Court
, my current selection in the “Currently Reading” box. It took me a long time to get through the book, but only because I’ve been distracted over the holiday season. The book itself is quite a quick and easy read and really interesting. I’m no scholar of the court, but I’m not oblivious to the American judiciary yet I learned quite a bit from reading the book.
Not only was it a refresher on some major court cases that we all learn about in civics class (Marbury vs. Madison, etc.) but there were a number of cases presented that I wasn’t familiar with. Even more interesting, though, it made me think about issues relating to court procedure that I hadn’t given much consideration. For example the role of debate in conference. Or the importance of having the oral arguments at all.
So two thumbs up and all that. I’ll try to think of someting new to read soon, and update the “Currently Reading” selection.

I was reading my monthly Dreamhost customer newsletter yesterday. I mentioned before that a prior newsletter had been written in haiku form. This past month the newsletter was written as a gangsta rap. So that’s nice.
On the content side, Dreamhost has again raised the disk space and bandwidth allocations for all their plans. Pretty awesome stuff. Guess I should do something provocative to drive more traffic to my site so I can take advantage of what I’m paying for!
