Online Magazine Publishing
As I have written here before, I’m trying to get my podcast Showbiz News - Online off the ground. Of course to report the showbiz news you have to know what’s going on. So that means I have to read the trade magazines.
The problem is that I live in the Washington, DC suburbs. You can’t even get Daily Variety home delivery in the eastern Los Angeles suburbs. If I subscribed I would be getting the news days or even weeks late, which is totally pointless.
Aha, Internet to the rescue!
Luckily the periodicals I want to read have online editions. Unfortunately, some are implemented better than others. In all cases I think the web sites are intended to be supplements to the printed edition. The news stories are more up to date, etc. The problem is, they don’t work as well for those of us who are not planning to buy the print edition as well.
What I’d like to see publishers offer is an online edition that more or less mirrors the print edition. I’d like an online Daily Variety that I could download and print out. Oddly it seems like the sister publication Broadcasting and Cable does get it, as that have an online table of contents that shows you what’s in the current issue.
I’d like to see Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, etc. follow suit. Of course the holy grail will come when we get e-ink e-books. Particularly tabloid size e-ink e-books. Then I really do expect to be able to download the online periodicals on to my e-ink tablet.
Let’s start moving in that direction today please.
