The Perfect Plan

Posted in life at 8:36 pm by mridley

Aha, I have figured it out. As I mentioned I have developed a little pretend crush on Rose McGowan and as I also mentioned, Sisters of Mercy are playing in DC in March. Well now, what an incredible twist of fate this is. Seeing as how I snapped up a couple extra tickets just in case, I would like to take this opportunity to invite Rose to go with me. Cuz I’m sure that is very likely to happen. But I mean…their LA tour dates are at the House of Blues…in Anaheim…and San Diego. Whitey plz. 9:30 is much better than those crap venues.

So anyway, open invitation…you just let me know baby doll. I’ll be holding my breath…or perhaps not.

Sisters of Mercy at 9:30 Club in DC - March 7

Posted in music at 10:23 am by mridley

This is exciting news.  The Sisters of Mercy are playing at the 9:30 Club in DC on March 7.  I had no idea they were even touring.  I have purchased my tickets, I suggest you all snap them up before they sell out.  I wouldn’t hold my breath that they come around again any time soon - I’ve been waiting to see them since 1992.  As far as I know this is the first time they have played anywhere near me in the past 14 years.

IPTV on DVD-RW?

Posted in media, tech at 9:51 am by mridley

As I have mentioned before, I’m pretty intrigued by the Tivo+Rocketboom deal. I think going forward this is going to be a huge change in the media landscape. Independently produced content delivered over the Internet either directly from the producer or perhaps through yet to emerge distributors. And I don’t think it will all be two man teams producing low budget entertainment. I am sure that higher budget productions will pop up once the business models are ironed out and revenues become proven.

Need a Laptop

Posted in life at 9:20 am by mridley

Not having a laptop any more has become such a productivity suck. My old ibook died almost a year ago now, and I really need to replace it. I hate to spend the money, and certainly I won’t be until I get my job situation clarified. Still, it’s hard to have to do all my online work from my PC in the basement. That environment is not conducive to focus and efficiency.

I know if I could take a laptop to Starbucks and get online there, as I used to do, I would get a lot more done. This is killing me on Showbiz News - Online as I just cannot get a second episode out for some reason. The recording process is quick enough but the preproduction work of keeping on top of dozens or hundreds of news stories and editing down to the top few is just not happening.

And I’d say shownotes.info is also suffering. Granted the site is up and stable and running fine, but I am not getting the feature enhancements developed. And that’s unfortunate for the users.

So even though I’m cheap, I may have to break down at get a Macbook Pro when they come out. Perhaps it will pay for itself in the end by allowing me to ramp up on Showbiz News - Online and sell ads, as well as pushing the ClickGrid advertising on shownotes.info more (plug! plug!).

No Rest for the Wicked

Posted in life at 10:42 pm by mridley

Very frustrating, I feel like I’m behind on all my personal projects.  Just when I got past the whole holidays “thing” and regained my energy I’ve had to spend the past bit of time looking for a new job.  Luckily I think that will be wrapped up very soon and then I can get on with doing all the stuff I thought I’d have done by mid-December.

Sundance Shorts

The Sundance film festival has made a number of shorts available online in Flash format. Kind of cool.

Jobs

Posted in business, life at 5:24 pm by mridley

So it looks like I may be out of work (again!) in a week or so. Have I mentioned how much I fucking hate the tech industry? Granted this has always been a contract position with the expectation it wasn’t going to last forever, but I am not thrilled by the way this is being handled.  ANd I think giving more than a week’s notice would be nice. Perhaps I’m picky that way.

Pictures

Posted in life at 10:55 am by mridley

I find it really annoying when I go to someone’s web site and they don’t have a picture of themselves. I’m not sure why, it just annoys me. It just occured to me, though, that I don’t have one either. So I have put one on the about page. Enjoy. Try not to be too jealous…with effort I’m sure you can contain yourselves.

nomeansno

Posted in music at 8:28 am by mridley

his mother was a secretary, I think. her father a rapist.

OK, this might be slightly incriminating, but I downloaded a ton of nomeansno albums the other day. Now, IN MY DEFENSE, I owned every single one of them on CD and they all got stolen out of my storage space in California. And I think ALL of them are out of print. So I do not feel bad at all, considering that over the years I have bought every one of their albums (or at least almost all of them) and t-shirts and I’ve seen them live, etc. So they have made their money off me.

So anyways, I have been listening to a ton of stuff off of 0+2=1 and Small Parts Isolated and Destroyed and Mama that I haven’t heard in YEARS. And it just reminded me again of what an incredibly awesome band they are. If you’re not familiar with nomeansno I highly highly highly suggest you check them out.

And if you think Coheed and Cambria are punk (no seriously, some little emo girl told me that once) then you really need to learn about nomeansno. Now I’m not exactly sure how to tell you to do that since a ton of their stuff is out of print. But if you can find copies of the albums I mentioned above, or Wrong (which I think was reissued somewhat recently) then you should. Go on gemm.com or something. I dunno what to tell you. Just check them out. I don’t know if they tour any more since they’ve been around since like 1979, but if you ever get the chance to see them live you really should. They rock my socks.

Rose McGowan

Posted in life at 8:22 am by mridley

This is so parenthetical and unimportant, but I have such a little celebrity crush on Rose McGowan lately. This wouldn’t at all be noteworthy, except that I don’t do that whole starfucker celebirty crush thing. Well I had a pretty big pretend-crush on Alyson Hannigan for a long time, who I didn’t (and still don’t) know. But at least I had met her at a party for like two seconds once.

Anyway it’s been bugging me because I happened to catch a rerun of Charmed on TNT (laugh if you must, I don’t watch it..or..I didn’t..apparently I do now). I had forgotten that they put her on there after Shannon Doherty had whatever drama explosion she had. But anyhow, so I was watching Charmed and you know what I realized? Rose McGowan is adorable! So I had to get a Tivo season pass for it. I guess that’s about as much follow through as I have in me.
