I installed Wordpress 2.0 tonight. I have no idea why…but it’s new..so I did it. I’m not really thrilled with the Wordpress upgrade process, but then again the program is free and it’s not like I’m making it better. Still it seems rather error prone…not that I’ve had a problem yet - knock on wood.
I’m not exactly clear on what’s new in Wordpress 2.0. There might be Release Notes somewhere with the changes, but if there are I don’t know where they are. The administration dashboard is a bit new and different, but feature-wise I’m not sure what if anything is changed or better.
I wish they would put in some kind of comment spam mitigation. I like the Moveable Type TypeKey system and I wish there was Wordpress support for it. I know that MT and Wordpress are sort of rivals, but there’s no reason for Wordpress not to support TypeKey and if there were such a plugin I would install it. But there’s not. So oh well.

In the Syndicate section on the side bar I’ve added a Protopage link. I’ve just learned about Protopage recently and basically it’s an AJAX home page/personal portal. It’s pretty neat. I tend to try various home page portals for a little while and then get bored and set my start page back to Google, but for now it seems like a useful portal. So check it out!

I bought my Series 2 Tivo because I was interested in the Tivo Online Services package. So far this has proven to be a bit underwhelming - the streaming podcasts seems to defeat the point for me, along with the lack of a directory, and somewhat kludgey integreation with Yahoo’s Internet content.
On the other hand, the somewhat less hyped beta release of Rocketboom-on-Tivo I am very much digging. I hope they open up this platform a bit more to allow other content providers to play. I want my Diggnation and commandN on Tivo! And more importantly, I want Tivo to create an open platform for the next generation of “television” content.

Is it just me, or does Firefox 1.5 crash a lot more than previous versions? I’ve disabled a bunch of extensions, but I still find that the app crashes on average at least twice a day. Somewhat frustrating, but I don’t think it’ s a good idea to downgrade versions. Perhaps I’ll look into Flock, although that’s not advertised to be the bastion of stability either.

For some reason my GMail spam filter seems to be..well..turned off for the past day or two. It’s not completely off, as one or two emails are marked spam but the vast majority of spam is just getting dumped into my inbox. Historically GMail has been pretty good at filtering most of the spam so I’m not sure what’s going on. It really does feel like the filtering has been switched off. But there doesn’t seem to be an option to actually do that (or turn it back on).
Hopefully it fixes itself soon.

As anyone who reads this web site knows, a while back we started up shownotes.info as a resource for podcasters and vidcasters to keep their program “show notes” in a community editable way. The main user of this site has been Adam Curry with his Daily Source Code production. The way this has worked is that he will post an episode of the DSC, and then subscribers (such as myself) will listen to it and make notes accordingly. For the most part the first contributor to that day’s page starts from scratch (although lately Adam has been posting a brief text outline of the show on his web site) and just type in what we think appropriate.
But now, with my own podcast, I’m trying something different. I am in the process of softly launching Showbiz News - Online which I plan to be a weekly news roundup of..yes..entertainment industry news. So during the course of the week I try to follow what’s happening in the industry, what’s being reported in the trade press, and then at the end of the week I’ll go through and select the top stories to include in the podcast.

I purchased a Tivo the other day. We already had a Tivo in the house - my roomate has an old Series 1 model. I was feeling left out, however, in the wake of the recent Tivo Online Services announcements. So I went out and got a Series 2. I’ve signed up for the Online Service access, but we’ll see when that gets activated.
In the mean time I was clicking around, playing with HMO (my last Tivo that I bought for myself was a DirecTivo so we never had any of the cool network-enabled features like HMO or Online Scheduling). In the Showcases I happened to notice Rocketboom. Yes, Rocketboom the vidcast. It turns out that Tivo has just launched a trial whereby people with Internet-connected Series 2 Tivos can download Rocketboom to watch on their TV. The actual downloads are not scheduled to start until Monday, so we’ll see how it works in practice. I’m excited at the prospect. Not just because I like Rocketboom, but because I think the larger concept of using the Internet as a delivery mechanism for niche video content is going to be TV 2.0 and will change everything.
So we’ll see.
I hope my other favorite vidcasts like Diggnation and commandN sign up with Tivo. They belong on my television.

Yahoo! has acquired the social bookmarking site del.icio.us. I must confess that I am not a big del.icio.us user myself, although I do have an account. However it’s noteworthy and probably will miss the “mainstream” press, so I thought I’d mention it here.
I keep my social bookmarks primarily in furl, although I do like the del.icio.us for: tag concept. Too bad nobody tags stuff for me. If you want to, though, I do have bloglines looking at for:mridley for me. So tag away!

So I’m not much for goth clubs, in general, but I just happened to go to The Birthday Massacre’s web site today to find their management contact info, and lo and behold apparently they are going to be at Alchemy at Nation in DC on December 29. I may very well have to go to that show. Cuz really who knows when they would be around here again. If you’re in DC and into dark electronic music I’d say check out The Birthday Massacre if you’re not already familiar.
