New England Journal of Medicine

Posted in life at 8:53 am by mridley

When I first moved to California back in 1998, I didn’t know anyone out there and I wasn’t really into the bar scene. That cramped my social life I guess, although I was also fairly introverted at the time. Or maybe just shy. Who knows.

In any case, to pass the time and amuse myself sometimes I would go to the public library on the weekends and read various periodicals that interested me. I used to read the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association fairly regularly. I wouldn’t necessarily read them cover to cover, and I’m not a doctor so I wouldn’t necessarily follow all of the biochemistry involved. Still, I do have some basic knowledge of biology and chemistry and I’m not stupid, so it was still informative and interesting to see what kinds of studies were being performed.

Updating Currently Reading Link

Posted in books, life at 11:50 pm by mridley

I’m going to update the currently reading link, as my current state of unemployment and general malaise about future career directions is making it hard for me to focus and be productive on my side projects. So I think I’m going to break out my favorite book and re-read Atlas Shrugged to help focus me on what I know my priorities should be. I’m sure that everyone reading this has read and loved Atlas Shrugged, but if you haven’t then click the link and buy it RIGHT NOW. RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW. STOP READING THIS AND GO BUY THE BOOK.

Some people think that The Catcher in the Rye is a great coming of age story, but Holden Caulfied never had much on Dagny Taggart in my book.

Hair Cuts

Posted in life at 11:28 pm by mridley

I got a hair cut today. I always tend to let my hair get too long to the point where it’s shaggy and unappealing before I finally break down and go in to get a trim. It’s not that I don’t like getting hair cuts, because I do. I just never manage to actually schedule them.

I didn’t really want to go today, because I didn’t want to spend the money. But I was looking somewhat unseemly and I do have an interview next week, so I guess it was an unavoidable expense. In any case, it was great as always. My favorite part of it is when the girl shampoos your head. I don’t know if it’s only because I never otherwise touch people, but that feels so good. It’s not sexual, but its probably the most physically intimate I get with another person on any kind of a regular basis and it feels good.

I think maybe one day when I make my millions of dollars I will get a trim every day so I can have someone wash my hair.

Two Weeks Notice

Posted in business at 7:50 am by mridley

Perhaps I’m just a little bitter about being recently shit-canned, but I’ve been thinking about the whole two weeks notice thing. The conventional wisdom is that it’s professional courtesy for an employee to give two weeks notice before leaving a job. I think it might be time to revisit that.

Satellite Radio Copyright Infringement

Posted in media, politics at 7:42 am by mridley

I was watching CNBC’s Squawkbox this morning and they’re reporting that the record industry is contemplating bringing a copyright infringement suit against the Sirius and XM satellite radio operators because of their new portable devices. As I understand it, the way these devices work is somewhat like TiVo for radio. The portable units don’t have a satellite receiver built into them, so they record content while they’re docked and then you can play it back when you’re out and about.

There was a comment made by a CNBC reporter that the fair use doctrine allows you to save broadcast music for personal use. I’m not so sure about whether that’s settled legal precedent, but there is a settled precedent for time shifting and that seems to be the main point of these portable devices. Hopefully if they do bring a suit the satellite operators can get summary judgement and move along quickly.

PS - so Becky Quick has an unofficial fan site? That’s hot. She’s a cutie pie.

Work and Updates

Posted in life at 4:28 am by mridley

I’ve been very remiss in updating this site the past week or two because I’ve recently become unemployed and finding new employment has been my number one priority. In addition to taking up a bit of time, the overall stress of the situation has sapped a bit of my energy. I’ll try to do a better job updating, nevertheless.
