Continuing on my musical theme this morning, it’s really unfortunate that Kirsty MacColl is dead. I wouldn’t mind talking to the chick who wrote Walking Down Madison. Hitting rather close to home these days. But alas she got run over by a boat, so I guess I’m shit outta luck.
Story of my life. (hm…I guess Mike Ness is alive…)

I think this post safely falls under the category of pet peeve, so tune out now if you don’t care about my musical quirks.
Still interested? Good. So here’s the deal - as everyone over the age of 18 living in the western world knows, The First Cut is the Deepest is a classic Cat Stevens song. As everyone under the age of 40 knows, it was covered a while back by Sheryl Crow. I’m not going to argue about which version is better, that’s pointless. But Sheryl Crow’s version is not entirely faithful to the original lyrically. Her deviation from the original has intrigued me since I first heard it…

There’s a writeup in the current issue of Road and Track magazine about the forthcoming Aston Martin DB7. For those not familiar, well, read the article I guess. Basically the DB7 is a smaller sportier edition of the DB9. And somewhat substantially less expensive. But of course there’s a waiting list so it’s not like you can actually buy one.
There’s a sidebar in the article comparing the car to its “competition” the Porche 911S and some Maserati. And in fact they give the edge to the Porche as it’s cheaper and a little faster. I’m sure Porche fans will smirk. Some Aston fans may get huffy. Me? I just laugh. The idea that anything could compete with an Aston Martin is so rediculous. I don’t accept or understand the premise, so I cannot find fault with the conclusion.
Now I just need to find a spare 120 large and someone who can pull some strings to get me on the waiting list. Oh well. Some day. Maybe.

Well it’s not as slick and integrated as I wanted it to be, however shownotes.info has launched. This is my general purpose wiki/shownotes site for any and all pod- and vid-casters. Basically taking the work we did with Adam Curry’s DSC and making it generally available to anyone.
It was a hard decision to launch today, because I still do not have all the features I want or things nearly as integrated as I want. But I think it’s the sort of thing where it will never be “ready” so I may as well just launch. I’m hoping a lot of people start using it so I can get additional feedback which can drive development.
Certain things I know we need - like an RSS feed generator. Others may want features I’m sure I haven’t even thought of yet. I do have a short list of features that are on my “nice to have” list, so we’ll see how soon I can get those cranked out.
I’ve stuck with MediaWiki as the backend wiki, and put up a Joomla site as the introduction/splash screen. Again it’s not as integrated as I want but hey..it’s a work in progress. Now all I need are tons of eager users. So everyone reading this, go sign up and send me feedback!

I’m getting pretty close to being ready to announce my wiki podcast and vidcast shownotes portal. While I say I’m getting “close”, I still haven’t finalized on the software mix I’m going to use. I’ve been using MediaWiki for the Daily Source Code shownotes and that’s been working well. But of course for the larger portal site I need features that aren’t available in MediaWiki.
I’ve been doing a little bit of hacking on MediaWiki, but also considering whether I want to integrate something like Joomla as well. Of course implementing the integration there would be tricky unto itself. Decisions decisions.
I think the main thing is just to get it launched, and then refine the software as the site grows. So hopefully I’ll have the alpha version launched this week.

I would like to know more about this. Apparently M-Audio is about to release the M-Audio Podcast Factory Profesional Podcasting Solution
but I haven’t seen any details on it. M-Audio usually makes some great hardware, so I’m excited to see what this looks like.

I saw this bit on the alarm:clock that SugarCRM has raised $18.5M in Series C from some top name VCs. I wonder what they’re going to do with the money?

Isn’t the Internet great?
You know the late night infomercials for all the get rich quick schemes? They’ve been around forever, or at least since the cable networks realized they actually don’t have 24 hours of high advertising revenue content to show every day. I’ve watched them over the years. I find them amusing. They promise you quick and easy money in real estate or currency trading or online auctions or whatever the fad of the moment is. If you listen between the lines though, there’s usually always something rather “shakey” about the business premise they’re promoting.

I turned on my TV earlier and it was tuned to CNBC. I only caught the end snippet of the story, so I don’t know all the context. With that disclaimer being stated, here is what I heard; apparently the Burger King franchisee who owns quite a few Burger King restaurants in the New Orleans area is very hard up for employees. Presumably a lot of people who worked at the Burger Kings are in shelters, etc. now and so while the buildings may be ready to re-open, the staff isn’t available.
To remedy this, they are now offering a $6,000 signing bonus to start working at Burger King. I think I’m going to use that as a bargaining position when I go in for interviews next week. “Hm…that compensation package is okay, I guess, but I mean…Burger King offers people $6,000 signing bonuses to work at the drive thru, so what can you do for me?”

This post is mostly directed to readers of the DSC shownotes wiki although input from anyone with experience contributing to wikis would be appreciated. Or really just anyone in general.
