Next Steps for the Slingbox

Posted in tech at 8:49 pm by mridley

I don’t own a Slingbox. Yet. I’m thinking about it though. The device hooks up to your home television and allows you to view television content on a PC running Windows XP which has their software installed. Whether that PC is in your house, or across the world. The reviews I’ve read have all been quite positive.

When I first heard about the device, I didn’t really get the point. But I’m seeing how it could be a handy thing to have. There are some features they could add which would move it from the “maybe” into the “very probably” purchase category.

Right now the Slingbox is a fairly single-task oriented appliance. It takes video in from your cable/satellite/DVR, and delivers it via IP to a PC. That’s a good start. I’d like the ability to stream from one Slingbox to another. I’d also like the ability for the Slingbox to read audio and video content from one or more computers and make that part of its streamable library. If I’m working at my laptop in a hotel room, I might not want to watch what’s live. I might want to watch a movie that I’ve ripped to my computer. Or I might want to listen to mp3s.

If the Slingbox can move from a single-purpose television retransmitter to a device which allows me universal access to my media assets, it becomes a lot more compelling of a proposition.
