I would reccomend any readers who like to or have to dress up to get on the Jos A Bank mailing list. Seems like I get a new e-mail discount/promotion from them every week. I know true clothing snobs look down on Jos A Bank as low-end and trendy, but I can’t afford bespoke so it works for me.

I’m not sure if this is a well known feature with Wordpress or not. I just noticed it, so I’m posting about it. If everyone else already knew about this, then I guess I’m just dumb.
Anyway, I noticed today that if you save a new post and publish it, but change the time to a time in the future, the post will show as saved under Manage->Posts but won’t actually show up on the site or in the RSS feed until the time that you set the timestamp to.
I think this is very cool. If everyone else already knew this, then…move along..nothing to see here.

QVC, Home Shopping Network, etc. are huge businesses. They make a lot of money and sell a lot of stuff.
Where’s this business on the ‘net? Sure there are tons of e-commerce sites out there with giants such as amazon.com and ebay. But they don’t provide the same shopping experience that home shopping networks do. The value that a home shopping network provides is they are able to buy a large quantity of often off-label products and sell them at a deep discount. These are products you wouldn’t necessarily know to look for because they lack a traditional marketing presence.
The shopping networks provide the large buying power to be able to offer the customer low prices, as well as the marketing to tell you that the products actually exist. It seems like this model should work on the Internet and open up an even larger market than is available in cable television.
Perhaps a podcast would be the right delivery model for this service. The Apple-engineered extended tags that offer photos to be displayed at specific times and click-throughs to producer-defined URLs. Sounds like a model that could work.

From boingboing, apparently ourmedia.org needs volunteer moderators to go over the mass of uploaded content. I sent them an e-mail volunteering shortly after they launched, but never heard back so apparently I’m not cool enough. But maybe my gentle readers will make the grade.

First up, I was reading this piece on boingboing about the Bush administration’s concerns about going forward with the already ICANN-approved .xxx top level DNS domain. In addition to the boingboing entry, I’ve seen stories on slashdot, and other places as well.
Michael Gallagher, assistant secretary at the Commerce Department says:
“The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children.”
I don’t get it. First let me state my position, I am a Republican but an honest conservative and I don’t see how it’s governmernt’s business to decide what should or should not be on the Internet in any case. I think all porn all the time is fine if that’s what the market decides.

I’m a big furl user, and I tend to Furl!!! a lot of stuff (you can drag that link to your browser bookmarks toolbar and Furl!!! stuff too). If I see a page I like and I know I want to come back to it later but I’m in a hurry, I just Furl!!!
That leaves me with a ton of stuff in my General folder in furl, and from time to time I try to go through and categorize things for my finding convenience. I’ve gone through and moved most of the crap out of General and into appropriate folders again tonight.
I’ve created a backup and data protection archive. I mentioned my backup software archive before, but now I’ve created an additional topic for things related to data protection that are not necessarily backup software per se. Enjoy! If you have additional links for me to check out, drop me a line.

I’ve updated my cyber.stalk page to include a link to my livejournal. Yes, I have one. No, I do not opine with melancholy about the girls in my class who don’t like me. Mostly I just post stuff from life and/or the ‘net that amuses me and I feel like sharing. A lot of it is pretty politically incorrect. Read at your own peril.

I haven’t seen anyone mention it, but what are Apple’s plans for 64-bit support on Mac OS X when they move to Intel chips? Will they drop 64-bit support? Will they only support 64-bit capable Intel processors? Looking at Intel’s recently announced roadmap it looks like 64-bit is going to be available throughout the x86 platform, but those chips won’t be shipping until after Apple has announced it will be shipping Intel-based Macs.
I doubt the first Intel-based Macs will be running Itanium processors. Maybe Apple will announce Pentium M-based ibooks and powerbooks before releasing their Intel desktops. That would be a pain for software engineers developing large memory applications on powerbooks.
We’ll have to wait and see.

As I just wrote, I was looking for the web site of the Loudoun County Public Library system. I was curious to see what their reciprocal policies were with other library systems. However, when I loaded their home page I found this. Not what I was looking for, but very cool- free wifi access at the library. That could be a very productive place to get work done.

So I wanted to find the web site for the Loudoun County Public Library and I figured I’d just google for it. Not feeling like typing all that out, I just entered “lcpl”. Sure enough, the first result was in fact the link I wanted. Why is that interesting at all? Well I hadn’t thought about it when I typed it in, but LCpl is the abbreviation for Lance Corporal as well. I’m a little surprised that the Loudoun County Public Library’s web site has a higher PageRank than all the pages with the Marine Corps rank.
Then again, who knows..maybe I’m only mystefied by this because I am awake at 9:30 AM on a Sunday morning and that’s a little early for me.
